Lactose Intolerance: In and around!!

Let’s talk about a very ongoing issue these days LACTOSE INTOLERANCE. I assure, you must know at least one person who told you that they are LI. Okay so what it means? Being a Lactose Intolerant is your body not being able to digest the carbohydrate (Lactose) present in the dairy products. Also, FIY there are other products also, other than dairy that may contain lactose: bread, baked foods, salad dressings, candies etc (They contain a little amount of Lactose which might affect you if you are the one having severe symptoms). It usually occurs in adulthood and is very rare in babies and small kids. Fact: Around 75% people in this world are Lactose Intolerant.

What happens if you have it and still consume a dairy product? Well, you might experience indigestion, abdominal cramps, bloating, diarrhea etc. These symptoms might be mild or serious depending person to person, some people might be able to digest lactose in small quantities even if they are Lactose Intolerant and have issues only on consumption of large portion of the same.

Now that we know what this problem is! Let’s talk about what to do if you have it. First of all, you need not worry; it isn’t really a health disorder but just a “Digestive” one. You don’t need to rush to the doctor for this. You just have to change your eating habits to avoid the mentioned issues.

Opt for the Lactose free dairy products that are easily available in the market and come from different renowned brands. Also you can go for supplements of Lactose Enzyme because we all know the importance of dairy products in our diet (calcium and vitamin D). Replacing milk with a cup of yogurt or a slice of cheese is one of the options in this case, as they are easier to digest or you can always go for Lactose- free milk. But in case of very serious symptoms after intake, it’s better to avoid having any kind of dairy product. Avoiding dairy products might lead to deficiency of calcium thus causing weakening of bones, so to combat the requirement for calcium, juices fortified with calcium can be an option or maybe calcium supplements and there are many other options to go for. So maintain your diet, even if you do not have any option and still have to eliminate dairy products from your diet, make sure to balance them with other sources of calcium or supplements. Stay healthy!
